Harnessing the oligodynamic properties of copper, nano copper ions are infused into the electrostatic melt-blown fibres to exhibit antimicrobial effect.

Oxygen ion beam treatment is applied onto the melt-blown fibres to strengthen the adhesion of the nano copper ions. By doing so, oxygen molecules react with copper ions to form copper oxides, a reactive oxygen species.
The copper oxides (CuO) reinforced the nano copper ions (Cu2+) to penetrate and actively eliminate bacteria via oxidative damage.
The primary target of attack is the bacteria cell wall due to the presence of highly electronegative chemical groups that serves as sites for absorption of the nanoscale positively charged copper ions.
