A UMF grade is a key identifier for high-quality Manuka honey made in NZ. It is one of the most renowned grading scales available to Manuka honey and ensures authenticity. The honey has to be harvested, tested, certified and packed in NZ and exhibit key bioactivities to be verified.
At PURITI, not only is our honey UMF certified, we go above and beyond and have our grading scale above the requirements outlined by the UMF Honey Association. This means each of our jars of honey requires higher levels of MGO.
To put this into perspective, our UMF 12+ jar of Manuka honey has to have an MGO level of 400+. This is well above the requirements stipulated by the UMF Honey Association. Each batch of honey is independently tested and certified to avoid any fraudulent behaviour.
Quality Testing
Many companies use MGO ratings which can alter the perceptions of the honey as these numbers are usually quite high. Our PURITI jars are labelled with both the MGO level and UMF rating to prevent confusion and as part of our efforts to demystify the honey industry.
There are three main components found in Manuka honey. Methylglyoxal (MGO), dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and Leptosperin. Originally, it was thought that Methylglyoxal was the defining feature to identify the best quality Manuka honey.
However, Methylglyoxal is not the only component necessary. It is important to identify key DNA markers for the nectar and measure the non-peroxide activity to ascertain the potency and effectiveness. The UMF rating requires all three components to be successfully identified. This ensures purity, authenticity and quality with the maximum amount of nutritional benefits.
DHA is the chemical component MGO originates from and is found in the nectar of the Manuka plant. Methylglyoxal is the component that gives the honey its antibacterial properties whereas Leptosperin is the component that gives Manuka honey its anti-inflammatory properties.
